1st Week of Classsic Egyptian Film in Windhoek,12 - 17 August 2013


Within its monthly film series “African Perspectives” AfricAvenir has in the past and will in the future continue to screen high quality Egyptian cinema to the Namibian public.

Due to the outstanding and rich cinema heritage and history of Egypt, AfricAvenir, in partnership with the Egyptian Embassy, the Egyptian Film Centre, AfriCine, and the Goethe-Centre Windhoek, with financial support of Pharaoh’s Lounge, has decided to dedicate a full week of screenings to Classic Egyptian films. The film week will take place from 12 to 17 August.

In 2013 the week, which will hopefully become an annual event, will focus on films from the late 1950’s to the early 1970’s.

The Egyptian Ambassador, H.E. Dr. Haxem H. Ramadan, and director of AfricAvenir, Hans-Christian Mahnke, will jointly open the 1st Egyptian Film Week on Monday, 12th August at the Goethe Centre, 19h15. 
 The Egyptian National Day, Revolution Day, normally celebrated on July 23, will be celebrated after the end of Ramadan, in the week from 12 to 17 August.

Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, “A Man in Our House” (1961) by Henry Barakat, starring Omar Sharif in one of his first films, “The Night of Counting the Years - The Mummy” (1969) by  Chadi Abdel Salam, which was lovely restored by Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation, “Chased by the Dogs” (1962) by Kamal El Sheikh a felicitous combination of film noir and social commentary which was selected at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival, and “M Empire” (1972) by Hussein Kamal, featuring Faten Hamama, Egypts iconic actress legend. Furthermore the film week will present yet another Youssef Chahine film  “Destiny” (1997).

 The film premiered at the 50th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, where Youssef Chahine received a Lifetime Achievement Award. This film will be screened on 14th of August at the FNCC at 18h30. All the other films will  be screened from 12th to 17th August at 19h15 at the Goethe Centre. Download full Programme HERE
